The Mountain Goats: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert From The Archives
Музыка
We've been filming Tiny Desk concerts for more than 10 years. While revisiting our archives, we discovered that some of our earliest concerts never made it to KZread!
Watch The Mountain Goat’s Tiny Desk concert from 2010: www.npr.org/2010/01/03/122106...
Stephen Thompson | January 3, 2010
The Mountain Goats' John Darnielle keeps getting quieter, as his raw early bedroom recordings and bare-knuckle anthems continue to make way for polished ballads that whisper, seethe and mourn. The recent The Life of the World to Come at first feels strangely timid, but as its crushingly sad words sink in ("I am a flightless bird / There'll be no more after me," and so on), it hits slowly but deeply - less a punch than a gnawing ache.
In person, Darnielle's twitchy, nervous energy serves his fearless songwriting well: He exudes gentility and good humor in conversation, but his performances are utterly committed, with intensity that infuses his screams and whispers alike. In this solo Tiny Desk Concert, his four songs fit nearly into distinct categories: new and quiet ("Hebrews 11:40"), new and loud ("Psalms 40:2"), old and quiet ("Color in Your Cheeks," from All Hail West Texas), and old and loud ("Going to Georgia," from Zopilote Machine). It's no surprise that all four approaches serve him well.
Also, it should be noted that Darnielle drew a large and admiring crowd for this show, even though it appears in the video that it was attended exclusively by a photographer and the giant blond head of Lars Gotrich. Trust me: We wouldn't have missed this one for anything.
Set List
"Color in Your Cheeks"
"Hebrews 11:40"
"Psalms 40:2"
"Going to Georgia"

The 240p feels nostalgic too. I thought my eyes were going bad...

It brings me comfort to see that Going To Georgia is played at the top of the neck. Like, oh he played the same, boring chords when he was my age too. What a relief.

A LOT of his older work is like that. Even jabs at it in You Were Cool.
Lol I’d love to see him back on here now but cramming the whole band in there. This series was basically made for John though, he always kills solo. The man is just an eternal vibe

I believe that he once said that he started by himself but wanted it so that if and when he got a band it wouldn’t be ‘John Darnielle and.....’ I guess its a reverse Panic! At the disco situation lol
John Darnielle is a real troubadour--it's all about the words but his musicality is brilliant as well. What a combination of humility and intensity in this guy. If you have not seen their video of This Year, do it right now. It's my anthem for 2021. Maybe it's yours too.
Awesome to finally see this on the official youtube! You should definitely bring the Mountain Goats back for a full band session with some of their new songs

John is just the best person in the whole world. Who else could make a mistake on tiny desk and still be absolutely perfect

This man literally has my heartstrings in his hands everything he picks up that guitar and continues singing with all the passion those little lungs can muster. That's the music of a man that knows pain and how it feels to be excluded and downtrodden. Keep On Brother. Keep on. And don't let anyone tell you that you aren't making a difference.

@@masansr I believe he's said he doesn't like the themes of threatening self-harm based on the actions of another person. The image of a hopeless romantic at rock bottom with a 'colt 45 with a broken safety catch' isn't something John want's to romanticize, and I think he felt this song leaned a little too far into that territory

IVE BEEN LISTENING TO THIS VIDEO FOR 10 YEARS!!!??? so glad you guys chose this to reupload!!!
This takes you back to being young and naive, and you reconnect with all the wonderful things about that time of life. Thinking I knew what life had in store even though I knew I had no idea how it would unfold. It was a long time ago, but still feels like yesterday.
"going to Georgia" was beautiful
TMG have been carrying me through the quarantine so this has incredible timing
John so badass he just casually forgets the best line he ever wrote.
I keep coming back . "I have two big hands and a heart pumping blood and a 1967 colt 45 with a busted safety catch" very cool.
This was the first tiny desk concert I ever saw (someone else has released it), and it got me both into the mountain goats and tiny desk. Glad this is finally being properly released!

I first heard of the Mountain Goats through John Green - that trope is true I guess - but this was one of the first times that I really started to love them in their own right. This band’s crazy important to me - they’re the reason I picked up guitar a few years, and one of my very first goals was to learn every song in this set :)

also, I remember taking heed to the time that John messes up in the song. I was waiting for that. If I remember correctly, he also had to re-start on the second song, but that may have been cut out. It's actually really inspiring to see someone make mistakes.

It’s the shouting about 7 lines of the song in one chord that sells me on it
The speed he can play the guitar at the end of psalms 40:2 has me perplexed as to why he’s so underrated to this day
