Feb. 28, 2020 | Felix Contreras -- When I presented Cimafunk at the Alt.Latino SXSW showcase last year, it was easily one of the most dynamic performances I had seen in more than ten years of attending the annual music festival. I couldn't wait to get them behind the Tiny Desk so the band could strut its intoxicating mix of Afro-Cuban dance music and 1970s funk-and-soul from the US.
From the moment Cimafunk and his band start their feathery intro to "Alabao," it's clear that something different is about to go down. Lead vocalist Cimafunk (Erik Rodríguez) has mastered the mash-up of Cuban soneos (vocal improvisations) and deep, soul-singing over music that I swear could have been played by any of the funk bands I saw back in the '70s.
With a sound that would feel right at home in either the famed Apollo Theater or the hottest dance clubs of Havana, this young Afro-Cuban and crew take it to a whole different level. For example, the very traditional guajira piano riff on "Cocinarte" transitions to a James Brown-styled funk groove so easily, it sounds like they were made from the same root. (They are, but that is another story.)
The band breaks things down into the funkiest of bolero-swing only to have it explode into another funk romp, powered by lead singer Cimafunk's reimagining of 1960s soul singer Otis Redding and Cuban icon Benny Moré.
I've seen the band in Austin, Washington, D.C. and even on their home base in Havana, Cuba and every time, their tune "Me Voy" raises the roof and wakes the dead, with a deep Afro-Cuban, funk-party groove. This time, they turned the Tiny Desk into the hippest Cuban dance spot on the East Coast.
The band is making converts every time they play for new fans and you'll see why in this video. It catches them doing what they do best: combining two propulsive dance and musical traditions into one, singular musical vision.

NPR has very slowly but surely become my 1st call source of refreshing news about undiscovered and established musicians, with such a variety that is so welcome....One is never sure what to expect. And these live recordings always have a fresh vibe on whatever the artist portrays in their recorded work. Sometimes better, sometimes worse...always fresh.... I definitely loved this one...

It’s Cuban music, when he started off he was singing “blame it on me”, the first song he was singing a song about cooking a woman food, second song he was singing about finding something beautiful in life and over coming all the negative that one may be dealing with, and the last song he was singing about leaving to go to his home, finding nothing interesting outside, and also adds in that if a woman asked him over he’d go over to their house too if allowed or something. That’s pretty much the only things I could come up with from what he sang/said.

But isn't that what good music is supposed to do??? It is the universal language aside from math...but don't take my word, watch a bunch of 4 and 5 year old kids from any culture...and see what they do...they dance!

Went to their show in Chicago with some of my best friends and we’re impatiently awaiting the day they come back. The best show we’ve ever been to, the best energy, and we were brought on stage at the end. Absolutely amazing and unforgettable

I saw them live in Rhode Island... absolutely phenomenal and sooo much energy live. They were putting their hearts into it and had space to move and dance - lets just say this vid is a very “contained” version of them - nonetheless love the energy and hope to see them again soon 🧡

Simply amazing.
