Indigo De Souza: Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Hazel Cills | September 13, 2023
It's not exactly typical for artists at the Tiny Desk to share their future burial plans, but that's exactly what Indigo de Souza does halfway through her performance. "I wrote this song about my love for nature," the singer-songwriter says, introducing the track "Not My Body." "I think that when I die ... what I want is to be composted and to become soil, and for that soil to be used to plant a tree, and I want that tree to be so big and strong."
"I don't know what kind of tree yet - still thinking on it," she says, with a few giggles from the audience. "A tree that people can visit and be like, 'This is Indigo!' Until they die and they can't visit me anymore."
It's beautiful, unvarnished sentiments like that - a desire to be reborn as a big and strong redwood tree - that mark de Souza's lyricism. The 26-year-old songwriter's music always emits a certain nakedness, as she chronicles the unknowing that often comes from being in your 20s. In a set built from 2023's All of This Will End, here these songs come paired with horns as her soaring vocals move seamlessly through beats of youthful despair and hope.

My fiancee recently died and I've realized that society doesn't talk about death. So, when someone is suddenly face-to-face with with a tragic loss, nobody wants to talk about it because nobody knows how to talk about it. So Indigo's casual discussions on death as a very real part of life is very refreshing. Indigo is an incredible musician and a rad human, just like my boo.

Hope you're doing well. Yes death is a natural part of life, I speak to my students about it as naturally as I can. My father died last year and in 1st grade we had a very beautiful discussion about how to honour the life of our deceased ones ❤ they really, really needed to talk about their losses and it showed. We all need to talk about it. Thanks for your comment and for sharing your story ❤❤❤❤

I'm so sorry for your loss. We don't talk about it or embrace it enough as a society. I don't know what you are going thru, I have lost my dad and my oldest sister. But everyone is so unique and feel things so differently. To know someone truly is to let someone in and share a personal world with them and build it. That lost felt as real physical damage. I hope that you are doing well and have love in your life. I send my weak positive internet wishes your way.
Indigo's genuinely my favorite artist for the past couple of years. I've laughed, danced, sang, screamed, and sobbed to her songs. I've never felt so seen before like I do in her music. I was supposed to see her recently but she had to cancel her show, this made me even more excited for when it finally does happen

Indigo means a lot to me, "I love my mom" got me through 2021. The vulnerability and familiarity Indigo's lyrics brings is very comforting.
Younger and Dumber is such a moving song... I love watching her perform it live. When she performed it in Brooklyn, she also gave a beautiful preamble that made me feel connected to it.

This is the most hopeless i've ever felt in 25 years of my earth visit. Each day ever so gloomy. Somehow, this session for a moment, gave me peace. Thank you..

Your spark of life and hope persists - you are giving it time and air - this or any other moment does not persist! Trust and be kind to today - it’s all ok - all of it.
I think her lyrics are beautiful, creative, and relatable in a surprising way. She is a true poet.
''Any Shape You Take'' and ''All of This Will End'' are two records I will never forget, indigo has my heart forever.
chills. indigo de souza is one of the best musicians of our time. i love her.

she really is i'm so glad we're here to witness it
Wow when she sung "I want to be a redwood tree" that made me start crying for some reason. Resonances can really have an impact on you.
Wow. Im getting over the break up of a lifetime and 'Younger and Dumber' encapsulates my feelings perfectly. The rawness is so relatable.Thank you!
Mellow. Refreshing. Straight from the heart. This is music performed through passion and heartfelt emotion rather than technical showmanship. Fantastic and rare.
The fact that KZread put ads in the middle of "Younger and Dumber?" Honestly, jail.
THE GEM OF NC❤❤ NORTH CAROLINA WE UP 🫶🏼🫶🏼🫶🏼
She truly never misses ever. Indigo truly changed my life in teaching me how to be kinder to myself. I could never thank her enough.
If KZread view numbers are to be believed, Indigo basically played to a sold out arena show in the first 6 hours of this clip being uploaded, and I think we are all the better hearing it
She has the most beautiful eyes I’ve seen in a while 😮. I’ve listened her music for years never seen the persona
I've been lucky enough to live in Indigo's part of the world and got to witness her talent bloom firsthand. I knew from the first time I saw her perform at the Lexington avenue arts festival that she was something special and some day the rest of the world would know it.
“Edward Tree” on the time stamp is killing me 😭

Her little childlike giggles are just adorable. It's giving Regina Spektor vibes. What a pleasant treat this was and a beautiful soul she is. 🥰
She's the right type of artist for this show. One of the best Gen Z voices out there lyrically.
i love Indigo so much, her music, life philosophy and overall shared human experience touched me like no one's else. she nurtures all the good and important parts of life as a human being, relationships, death, nature, nothing is ordinary to her, and that's shocking in a ignorant work-driven world. her work kept me sane and happy for a good time, and i recommend her for anyone that feels like, experiencing and thinking of it all. in conclusion, shes a great human.
I really love, I really love, I really love, I really love, this Tiny Desk ♥️♥️♥️
Indigo will forever be the most amazing lyricist artist and person💕 been non stop listening for the past couple years
i'm so happy indigo got a tiny desk!! i've been listening to her for the past few years and i saw her live twice this summer and she is so so amazing
Indigo is amazing, I would definitely visit that tree
I've watched probably a 100 or so of these Tiny Desk Concerts and this is comfortably in the top 5 for me. This is all going in without knowing anything about you. Musically, that was just wonderful. You have a really nice band around you and you have beautiful range on your voice. No idea the worth of it, but my mind really dug it. Thanks for sharing.

@@awake_at_the_wheel7644 Man, that's a tough one. Before posting this, I did an unscientific poll in my mind and it felt about right. I'd have to do some digging around my viewing history to respond. Give me some time, and I'll make it happen.
I’ve watched this countless times. I drove 4 hours solo to see her in Madison WI last year and I’ll be seeing her again this year. Indigos voice has carried me through things I thought would be the end of me. Magic.
Mexican fan here! I discovered your music a few months ago and this new album just hit me like no other. I just wanna say that you're music has so much power on my feelings, on how sometimes I feel something and I don't get to know why, but your songs help me understand these feelings and accept them as part of the human experience, because you feel them too, and you make beautiful art about them, thanks for sharing that with the world. You just made my cry and smile tonight while listening to this whole beautiful set. Lots of love from Mexico :)
This has been such a delightful way to start a cool fall day!
Whole body erupting in goosebumps. What a voice
I saw her perform live in Richmond the same day this was recorded!! I’ve been sooo excited ever since she said she did NPR that morning and now it’s finally here! I’m crying in the break room right now watching this. I

Cannot believe she has made it this far. My favorite artist on one of my favorite platforms. Amazing performance, amazing human.
I saw her open for Beach Bunny with Field Medic in 2020, literally right before the pandemic and loved her ever since. Her music got me through the pandemic and some of my darkest times in my life. I love Indigo with my whole heart and soul

So insanely grateful for these. It’s just amazing to have music. Something about this venue and journalistic recording of human expression in a tiny desk just fully connects to my heart. Thanks to the artists and NPR.
Man, Younger and Dumber practically brings me to tears every time. Such a powerful song. She truly can write from her emotions and experiences. Definitely one of my new favorite artists as of late.

Indigo. My whole entire world😭 the most beautiful music.
crazy how tiny desks really is the best way to discover an artist. I definitely love what she does and will listen all her discography
I did not know this artist and I am mindblown so , once again, thank you !!!
Indigo and the band are great - no doubt. I want to also comment on Maddie's accompaniment - soulful and tasteful - a richness underlying Indigo's songs. The lap steel work was particularly - well - graceful and Gilmour-like. Well done, all!
I love indigo so much Been listening to her since 2020
