John Moreland: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
April 20, 2018 | Bob Boilen -- When you hear John Moreland's sweet voice, it's hard to believe he spent years singing in punk, metal-core and hardcore bands. You can still hear that passion in his music, only now it's punctuated by his acoustic guitar.
At the Tiny Desk, Moreland gave nod toward the more visceral side of his music when, about a minute into "Old Wounds," he sang, "if we don't bleed, it don't feel like a song." It's a line I could imagine Steve Earle singing. In fact, John Moreland's dad was a big fan of Steve Earle. It's a style of storytelling and image-painting that John Moreland has been making with his guitar for at least the past ten years, over seven albums. His songs are filled with characters and tales of broken love and broken people.
Moreland and his musical partner John Calvin Abney kick off the Tiny Desk Concert with "Sallisaw Blue," a song originally recorded in a bar in Moreland's hometown of Tulsa.
"Down for the count, along for the ride
Sipping cold medicine, ruining our lives
Slumming I-40 with American songs
They can bury our bodies in American wrongs"
This lead-off track to John Moreland's latest record, Big Bad Luv, is one of loneliness and pain but it comes from a talented man with a lot of heart, so it won't bring you down.

Just saw John in SF tonight. Best small venue show I've ever seen. Go see him live ya'll. So so good!
That was the best lead guitar playing I’ve ever seen bar none.
The guy on lead guitar..... is pure talent. I couldn't believe that 1st song. Gave me chills how smooth he was, and how much fun he's having! That's why I play. Because someday I want the opportunity to do it with a legend like John Moreland and do it with a style and sophistication this guy showed. Thanks guys! A display of PURE talent. Big love
John Calvin Abney mines that guitar for every ecstatic drop of emotion it's capable of and then some more ... absolutely stunnning guitar work. It's not just skill ... it's feeling ... these two are deadly

This is the absolute truth. Man, that guy somehow made his presence known by knowing how to back off at every right moment. Which gave every note he did play so much more relevance. That’s how you play together and not over each other.
.....not a wasted word , seamless guitar harmony and just an intimate reflection...... the perfect tiny desk performance....thank you guys
I just keep coming back to this
Easily one of the best performances at the Tiny Desk..
John Calvin Abney came straight out of the David Rawlings school. Beautiful playing.
John Moreland is one of my favorite artists - his voice is haunting, his lyrics are stirring. So glad he finally got the Tiny Desk treatment.
When music makes you cry it’s not your ears listening, it’s your soul
Dude on guitar/harmonica is KILLING it..reminds me of my dad's friend who passed away..that man could play the harmonica like no other
How about that supporting guitarist though!!

I strongly dislike country but I really love this man
It's artists like this that I find myself gravitating towards lately. Singer/songwriters that tell stories , guys like John Morland and Townes Van Zandt. We definitely need more like this.
Thank you Mr. Moreland for your music. I don't know much about anything but know when I see and hear the real deal. Sad to see untalented musicians make it big in the mainstream but people like Mr. Moreland don't get the recognition they deserve. Thank you again Sir.
Thank you for following you heart and allowing yourself to share you gift, brother. Keep up the great work.
His deep raspy voice, his lyrics and pounding on that great sounding Martin this guy is a real gift to us all! This guy is also rising to stardom.Look out Bruce Springsteen, this guy is moving through!
John Moreland is amazing. His songs make my heart hurt.

It is funny how his songs just touch you so deeply like your soul is crying. From the singing the lyrics to the guitar music it is just Heavenly to me. I sit on my deck and drink beer and listen to his songs over and over
The song Cherokee gets my heart. The guitar player in the red plaid is having so much fun through every song excellent guitar player as is John Moreland I just want to be there. All of the song Speak to My Soul. John Moreland please come to San Diego
That guy accompanying him...incredible!
This is some of the best songwriting I’ve heard in a long time and John Abney’s guitar is such an unbelievably perfect match for it. What a treasure this performance is.
I love John's voice and his songwriting style. I'd love to sit and drink a few with him and listen to him play for hours. Real talent.
I've been sleeping hard on this guy. Damn. "I've been mining the horizon looking for lies I've yet to tell". I mean come on...
A duo that reminds me of Guy Clark--poet/songwriter--and Verlon Thompson, guitarist extraordinaire.
INCREDIBLE sound with just two guitars. Wow
That is some great guitar playing and singing and lyrics. Fun to watch the first song where John Calvin Abney plays his smoking harmonica, then lays it down just in time to grab his guitar for more lickety-split picking!
John Moreland has revolutionized the way I write my own music.
Cherokee is such an amazingly powerful song. Gives me the chills from head to toe.
What guitars can truly sound like... wow. all of this is great.
Saw John open for Lucinda Williams in ATL a year back or so and was blown away. Good to see him getting some attention.
I love how his eyes are closed in every song ... If that's not telling you something I don't know what is

These Guys are awesome. I Hope they‘ll perform for a long long time.
That chugging riff for Sallisaw Blues is so damn addictive. Way better than the album version where the acoustic riff is drowned out.
I have watched this easily over 100 times now. A truly great performance
Old wounds...new favorite! NPR delivers another gem. These guys are incredible
John Moreland sure knows how to hit the heart strings. Love you bro. Keep up the amazing work 🇺🇸
It just doesn’t get any better than this. Come see us in the UK John. Much love
John Moreland you are the man!!! Great music, great soul and writing!!
Oh my God, you made a believer out of me. real fast. You know most guys would wear that harp, but this guy just picks it up, puts it down and goes right back to blazing on that guitar. You're both amazing. Thank you Tiny Desk Concerts, for finding me so much excellent music!
I woke up this morning and just wanted to hear some John Moreland, I didn't expect this when I searched his name in youtube. Thank you Tiny Desk!

Holy crap! I just discovered John Moreland last week and have been hooked since! This is awesome.
Powerful poetry, the melody pulls my heartstrings . . . . hooray for real country music.
So glad to see you looking so dam good....now you're stuck sticking around for many years giving all the people that love your music many many more songs. Thank you and WTG
I could watch this again and again. His songs are so heartfelt they hurt. I got tickets to see him play in Asbury Park in August. Can't wait.

Yes! Yes! Saw him in Tulsa a few months ago at Cain's Ballroom, so proud of his work finally getting the recognition he deserves. Such a wonderful and humble guy!
this might be the best music i have ever heard
Just found out about John Moreland, he's awesome...especially live and acoustic...those lyrics are crazy soulful...I'm sure anybody whose lived at all, love, lost and felt deep earth shattering pain can relate to his music...it's strangely therapeutic for me!!!
Old Wounds is an amazing live version.......Cant express the amazingness of it. Bravo. John Moreland...I missed your show in Lincoln, NE. You need to come back to Omaha NE. Cherokee hits me right in the feels.
Tiny Desk people... do not decide one day to bring this show to an end. Thank you for the artists you showcase. I've discovered new music and been warmed hearing familiar songs made new 👍😁 We saw Mr. Moreland last summer with Jason Isbell and the 400 Unit. It was a special night I'm glad you reminded me of that evening. Thank you so much, please carry on...annndd give the Sheepdogs a chance on here I think many would approve!
This is great. Thank you Tiny Desk...you are my heroes for bringing great little concerts to us. You rock!
Man those guitars sound magical...
The two of them suit each other. Personally never heard of either of them until today. I have now and am pleased to have done so
Thankyou. Melbourne Australia
It doesn’t get much better than this. Doubt I’ll ever see two people complement each other better than this. Thank you for doing what you do.

What a voice, lyrics and supporting guitarist. Providing inspiration in these uncertain times.
