NPR Music's Tiny Desk series will celebrate Black History Month by featuring four weeks of Tiny Desk (home) concerts and playlists by Black artists spanning different genres and generations each week. The lineup includes both emerging and established artists who will be performing a Tiny Desk concert for the first time. This celebration highlights the beautiful cornucopia of Black music and our special way of presenting it. We hope you enjoy.

Kirk Franklin, set up with his band and choir in a corner of Uncle Jessie's Kitchen, makes a declaration. "I know you're at home right now, in your draws, listening to some Jesus music. It's ok. Jesus loves you in your draws!" The Arlington, Texas studio, named after a long time close friend, features a large photo of the iconic "I AM A MAN" protest signs from the 1968 Memphis Sanitation Strike on the wall. The jubilant energy that Franklin and company emit, juxtaposed with a visual reminder of the strife that Black people have endured is illustrative of the importance of gospel music in the Black community.
For nearly 30 years, Franklin has been widely regarded for revolutionizing gospel. He incorporated secular music, particularly hip-hop, while preserving the message and integrity of traditional gospel. Here, he and his powerhouse choir pace through a decades-long, sixteen Grammy award winning discography of faith, praise and encouragement while cracking plenty of jokes. I cannot recall a more moving Tiny Desk home performance.
All month long, we've presented artists that speak to the diversity and complexity of Black music--where we've been, where we are and where we're going. For the final show, we take it back to the spiritual roots and there's no one more fitting to cap things off than Mr. Kirk Franklin.

I suffered from infertility tried for so many years to get pregnant. I always prayed to god to please bless me with a child. I was watching a mother play with her son on tik tok one day I cried and screamed to God "God please give me a child!!!!!" that same day something in me told me to take a pregnancy test... it came back positive! I couldnt believe it I was in tears and in shock!I took more pregnancy tests and they all came back positive! A week after I found out I was pregnant I found a cross necklace a few steps away from where I worked at and I then knew it was really God all along and never left my side. I now have a 11 month healthy beautiful baby boy. He's turning 1 in a few days! ❤ God is good!

I'm currently unemployed after resigning from my job last year. So, I wake up everyday feeling disoriented that I can't do the things that I ordinarily do with ease, financially. But I'm encouraged by the song "Great is Thy faithfulness, Lord unto me. All that I needed Thy hands have provided....." I know I have overcome. Thank you Jesus.

This Concert speaks to the consistency of Kirk Franklin's music. He just jumped between 30 years of music in 15 minutes and there wasn't a drop in quality or a drastic change in feel.

For anyone who don’t know who Kirk Franklin is, he’s a gospel genius. He has never really been a singer but he writes his own music and lyrics. He finds the best singers and musicians to bring his music to life. He’s a Gospel legend, and he’s not even done yet.

I have loved Kirk's work for decades. Every time I hear a song he has written it is inspiring. Kirk brings wonderful energy and glorifies God through his work.

He’s not a singer, but he is a KILLER musician. Kirk can write a song, assemble a choir, blend voices.....etc. if you don’t know him, you late to the party. Don’t analyze it. Listen to the old stuff and get that Kirk Franklin experience.

obviously the bassist impresses but the quality of the backing singers is monstrous, accuracy, groove etc... perhaps even rarer. Kirk Franklin is a very intelligent artist, knowing how to surround himself allows him to shine!

27 years ago I bought a CD by an artist named Kirk Franklin about whom I knew nothing. When I heard "Silver and Gold" I sat almost breathless for the entire song. It has accompanied me over the last 3 decades, through the ups and downs, and has kept a very special place in my heart, in my spirit. When they started in on Silver and Gold on Tiny Desk I just lost it. Like seeing a dear friend after many, many years. After witnessing an act of unconditional kindness. Like being wrapped in the arms of love. Like feeling lost in wilderness and then realizing that you are connected to something far greater than yourself. That you are cared for. That YOU care.

There's an argument to be made that Kirk Franklin has run the tightest musical group anywhere on the planet over the last 30 years. Every group he leads is a supremely focused and finely tuned musical making organism. The cohesiveness of a Kirk Franklin led band is unmatched. You could give this dude a quartet of plastic recorders played by 5-yr olds and we'd all still be making our stank face and bobbing up and down.
