This year, NPR Music is celebrating Black Music Month with an array of brand new Tiny Desk concerts - both from home and from behind our beloved Desk. Together, these artists represent the past, present and future of Black music. This month of carefully curated shows is a celebration of Black artists expressing themselves in ways we've never seen before, and of the Tiny Desk's unique way of showcasing that talent.

Almost 30 musicians, choir members and staff of the contemporary worship music collective Maverick City Music entered the NPR lobby and crowded the security desk to undergo COVID protocols. Even through the dull process of checking vaccination cards and test results, there was a real feeling of excitement for what was about to happen.
Some of the choir members were eager not only for the upcoming Tiny Desk concert but for later that evening, when they were scheduled to perform at a sold-out 20,000-seat arena nearby. A few of them had only previously performed with Maverick City Music in small venues and couldn't wait to move from the Tiny Desk to a big stage. Once upstairs, the group's enthusiasm grew during the set up and sound check. Even the NPR production staff was buzzing because we had not recorded such a large ensemble in our office in more than two years.
Once the performance started, Maverick City Music did what it always does. The members of the group became one voice, sharing beautiful music and spreading the good word with messages of hope, change and love. The group describes itself as a megaphone for a community of creatives that has been pushed to the margins of the industry of church music. Even for those who aren't fans of gospel music or for those who don't believe, it is possible to still find appreciation in this music's comforting and uplifting sound.
Most of the songs performed here are from the collective's new album, Kingdom Book One, which was produced in collaboration with gospel legend Kirk Franklin. It was a blessing to watch him perform here alongside talented vocalists Naomi Raine and Chandler Moore on the last song, "Kingdom."

My Mom passed early Thursday morning. I'm completely broken, please keep me in your prayers, she was my best friend, we slept in the same bed for years until when she was admitted to the hospital. One of my dear sister in the Lord sent me this song this morning, and I’m being blessed right now….perfect timing. Sis. Scott, thank you so much. My spirit is lifted…glory to God!! I’m so sorry for your loss sis! I also lost my mom last august and I’ve never known a pain like this. Through all things God is faithful, even the things we don’t understand. I don’t understand Gods design but I do believe all things work together for the good of those who love him and are called to his purpose. Preach! Everyone thinks the lights, the modern interior design, the coffee etc. are the way to reach the younger generations. Maybe that’s where it’s at for some… not judging cuz I like a lot of that too. But I also know a lot of young people like myself see straight through the production if the heart feels missing. When I listen to maverick city, live and on video, the spirit pierces through whatever the medium or the setting is. They mean the words, and it shows in the music and in their body language. The energy is contagious. I love the irony that while so many churches are busy adopting a modern aesthetic, more and more worship videos are being shot in old style churches with the stained glass and outdated carpeting. What’s old is new, and imo, we replace artistic inspiration with templates for cultural relevance.

I was homeless and then started sleeping on a family member couch. I was in ministry I usually came home late on weekends. Family member became upset why. I explained but to no avail. I was asked to leave, sleeping in the church and one night the Lord spoke out clearly, "I will settle you" I got a roommate and today 3yrs later I own a home, a very decent one. His promises are yes and amen 🙏

This song is SO TIMELY for my family and I! My 13 year old sister has cancer, and Sunday I had gotten a call from my parents asking to gather all of my siblings to come and say our goodbyes💖💖… We prayed, we asked for a miracle, and here we are 5 days later and my sister has made a MIRACULOUS recovery and doctors are in AWE!
Just went to this concert. This is literally Kirk at 2/10 energy. Dude is literally jumping and screaming for 4 hours straight. He's got 20 years on every person on stage and not one of them could keep up with dude. Also, I've heard him perform Kingdom a few different places, and he's done a different "sermon" at the interlude each time. The energy and genius in this man is most definitely not of this world.

My family and friends and friends were amazed by his energy as well. We attended the Oklahoma City show and he literally danced the ENTIRE show. I was so exhausted from dance and singing I took off work the next day to recover 😫🤣. Love Mav City Music and Kirk.

Does anyone else get emotional listening to this? I just cried OD on the bus 😂 I think it’s cuz I struggled with self hate for such a big period of my life. But now hearing these songs, I feel God’s love and grace. God’s love is the only thing that can fill our voids and complete us. And he loves me and YOU unconditionally. He loves us so much, He made us righteous, justified and holy forever through Jesus Christ! Peace and love to all 😊💛

I’ve found such comfort and joy in this collective. I wasn’t a Christian music listener. But I grew up in the Baptist church and l always felt that what bought closest to God was the music. Voices together. The ecstasy.

This is a wonderful song. My God has brought me through 77 surgeries. It started with a cyst was in between my esophagus and my lung. But God has healed me I haven’t had a surgery in over 10 years or more.He is my healer. The doctor told my mom about funeral arrangements, BUT GOD. I will live and not die but declare the works of God. If he did it for me, he will do it for you

Yes let’s pray for our Christian leaders & influencers. I’m sure the temptation is severe in the spotlight, but nothing is impossible with our Jesus. We just have to always stay near to him whether we have a platform or not.

My parents are into the Lord's ministry ,so l literally grew up seeing the wonders Jesus was doing in the life of those who realized how real He was. I can testify that I have seen Jesus heal the sick ,the blind see ,the hopeless got hope , the rejected ones became corner stones. Jesus has captured my heart and if people ask me what this God has than for me, I tell them to look at my life 🥺🥺🥺
