Nelly Furtado: Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Stephen Thompson | May 24, 2024
Nelly Furtado’s career has spanned a quarter-century, not to mention tens of millions of records sold, so it’s tough to fit all the highlights into a single Tiny Desk concert. But damned if Furtado didn’t at least try: Her set featured a bunch of her biggest hits (“Promiscuous,” “Say It Right,” “I’m Like A Bird,” “Maneater”), her remix of Missy Elliott’s “Get Ur Freak On” and, yes, a brand-new single called “Love Bites.” In all, 11 tracks - some of them complete, some of them truncated into medleys - made the cut.
For this set, Furtado assembled eight of her favorite veteran collaborators, who joined her in organically re-creating her busy, glitchy pop sound without relying on backing tracks. That meant incorporating everything from a violin to cowbell to beatboxing to scratching courtesy of DJ Lil Jaz - Furtado and Lil Jaz have a daughter together, Nevis, who served as the set’s creative director - in a performance that felt like a victory lap, a greatest-hits reel and a homecoming all at once.

“All Good Things (Come To An End)”

I'm still shocked how she went from being the most popular female artist in the mid 2000 to a 2 to 3 million views artist in the 2010. It happened so fast and yet her music was still just as good. I remember in 2017 talking to my younger french portuguese friend about her and she said "who ?" it broke my heart. I felt old for the first time. Happy she sang "Explode" and Powerless" not the most well known of her songs but two of my favorites. Thank you Nelly and Tiny Desk Concert.
She nailed one of the best live sets of her career, teaming up with eight of her favorite veteran buddies! They came together to recreate her unique, glitchy pop sound totally live, no backing tracks needed. Congrats for this era Nelly, love from Chile!

She still sounds stellar. She looks even more incredible now than in her earlier youth. One of the guiltiest pleasures that became my favorite music-listening pastime has always been digitally digging through my folk pop and post-folk pop crates to pick out an album from her underrated catalog. Thank you for making my adolescence that much more meaningful and poignant, Nelly Furtado. You were excellent here and so was your band. I'm extremely proud of you.

@@emilreads I had a long message and clicked off of this mini-screen like an idiot. I was basically going to concur with you about "Folkore" being one of the most underrated records of all time because I "NEVER" hear it receive acclaim, critically or even from her own aficionados (Besides myself.). "One Trick Pony", Childhood Dreams", "Picture Perfec"), "Try", and My Personal Favorite (I was pleasantly surprised and amazed by her as well as her band pulling off that epic rendition of it on here.) "Explode" opened up parts of my brain that no other music had at that time. It was unabashedly poignant, heart-wrenching, and simultaneously optimistic in significant segments of its cohesive entirety.

Nelly was my first concert when I was 10 years old and I’ve been in love with her music ever since! My favourite Tiny Desk. I didn’t quite get into Nelly apart from her big hits, now I LOVE everything she has done and touches. I started love her at 52! x
Folklore such an iconic album. I love it. 🎉😢 No skipping any of these songs 😭😞
Oh my goodness!!! What the heck has Nelly been up to all these years???? Thought she’d retired from the industry!!! Glad to see she hasn’t!!!! LOVE YOU NELLY!!!! TE QUIERO NELLY!!!!!🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸🇪🇸
Didn't know her personality... I'm impressed, not all the artists take the time to introduce the band. That's why I like Tiny Desk, you also get to know a bit of the artist's personality, besides seing them sing fo' real 🤯

Great voice im hoping she comes back with a new album ....!!😊❤
I had a solid crush on Nelly since early 2000's. Still in 2024, that hasen't change.
Thank you Tiny Desk for a trip back in time with some Nelly Furtado songs. I almost cried when I saw her, because from day one she started I have loved her!
Glad to see Nelly still so wonderful, singing like a bird. And she's still so beautiful as she always was. That is amazing. Abraços do Brasil!!!
Wondefull live concert! Nelly and the musicians that play with her are great!

I seen her in concert at a Christmas show. I was with my girlfriend in the front row against the gate. Nelly asked if anyone was celebrating a birthday and I raised my hand. She brought me up on concert, someone brought out a stool for me to sit on, and she sang a song to me. It was pretty incredible.

So beautiful, and your acoustic versions are amazing. You are an instrument,Nelly. This brings me back to my days in my 20's.
I remember she was the only pop singer who refused to take up autotune when it arrived. It was revolutionary and became an industry standard for sound engineers to fix it in the mix. Clearly she has never needed it. Fantastic band too

And the only artist that made his singing worse with auto tune was T-Pain - let that sink in
@NextenBlade
21 күн бұрын
Autotune does not make singers sound good - it is a vocal effect, which is exactly how artists like T-Pain used it (he can absolutely sing, check out his recent concert Live from The Sun Rose). All artists (especially major pop artists) have used what is called pitch-correction software for ages - that is a subtle technology that fixes the "imperfections" in a singer's voice (ex. if they're "almost" singing a certain note then it'll correct the pitch to have them sing exactly the right note). Even here though...it doesn't mean that someone who doesn't know how to sing will suddenly sound amazing, it's more like spellcheck when you're writing, you still have to know how to write, it just cleans up the typos. All of this to say - I hate how much there is a myth around that T-Pain used autotune because he didn't know how to sing, which is totally untrue and misunderstands what autotune is and why he used it.
@TheLizardWizard17

lets be honest, most people don't really know what auto-tune is... its alot more than just the typical T-Pain style vocals... They all use some pitch corrections in studio recordings, and she absolutely made use of it too.
the guitar guy and the violon guy performs so well that i think Nelly should release a full acoustic/unplugged album ! MTV should contact her to perform that !!! it would be awesome!
Thank you for this performance ❤ I didn't know this is exactly what I needed ❤🎉😊
