Rodrigo y Gabriela: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Музыка

I can't think of a better way to describe the music of Rodrigo y Gabriela than with three words: "heavy metal flamenco." And yet the duo doesn't play heavy metal - its members perform instrumentals on nylon-string guitars - nor does it play Spanish dance music. But the term fits because the pair's fierce guitar riffs feel powerfully electric, and because Rodrigo y Gabriela's rhythmic style showcases a frenetic strum that conjures the energy of flamenco.
The duo have just released a new album titled, 11:11, which pays tribute to the pair's heroes - Jimi Hendrix, Carlos Santana, Astor Piazzolla and Pantera's Dimebag Darrell. They recently performed a few tracks for the NPR Music Tiny Desk series including "Hanuman" and "Buster Voodoo."

    She did create her own style. Its not traditional rumba. Rumba mixed with elements of jazz, funk, metal, and latin folk. Plus if you look at her right hand movement it is definitely a different technique than those used by flamenco players. Similar. Its like its a parody of it but then it becomes its own unique thing. She even said it herself. In her beginnings she tried to emulate flamenco by ear so she came up with a different way of doing it.

    I couldn't find anything negative to say about either of these two if I tried to make something up. but the zone that Gabriella gets into when she's playing is a place I only wish I can make it to in my head one day. To have that focus and to so perfectly balance the art that Rodrigo breathes is a talent VERY few people (myself obviously included) will ever possess. These two, individually, and as a duo, will forever have a place in my heart when I need to feel...anything. Thank you.

    I play a little guitar. When I watch high-caliber guitarists generally pay most of my attention to breaking down the neck work. Rodrigo y Gabriela are the exception. Gabriela is one of the most masterful rythem guitar players alive today. She bangs her guitar like she considers it a percussion instrument closer to a drum than a piano.

  • @apothecary0420

    @apothecary0420

    8 жыл бұрын

    +S Mandalios I agree, the right hand is the foundation to solid guitar (as rhythmic intelligence is a prerequisite to competant musicanship). The left hand, however, is where true skill in music theory is displayed. When a good guitar player plays, their right hand is on autopilot. Every iota of cognisince goes into deciding variations up and down the neck.

  • @Siritos

    @Siritos

    8 жыл бұрын

    That's interesting, as I can't read music, nor do I have any understanding of the theory. So it's cool that you can make that distinction. I have a good grasp of the technique and a good ear, but the way I understand my left hand is about using shapes and patterns, and sometimes just trying random things to create something new.
