Nov. 13, 2019 | Bob Boilen -- Sunny War has a soothing voice but at the Tiny Desk, she didn't talk much, at least not until she saw the Talking Master P doll on the Tiny Desk shelf. With a huge grin, Sunny looked up, pointed at Master P and said to NPR Music's Stephen Thompson (the doll's owner), "if you want to sell it..." Stephen promptly replied, "not for sale!" To make her even more envious, he quipped, "It's signed by the man himself." It was a lighthearted moment from a heavy-hearted singer.
Sunny War's next lines, from her current album Shell of a Girl, were dark. "Before you rip your girl to shreds / Be sure you really want her dead." These are words from a young woman who has been homeless, busked on city streets and Venice Beach, left home feeling she was a burden to her distraught mother, had her life complicated by drugs, and yet still found a way to pick up a guitar and bring joy to others.
Sunny War began learning guitar from her uncle at around the age of seven. One of the early songs she learned was The Beatles' "Blackbird," an almost prophetic tune with the line, "Take these broken wings and learn to fly." But it was the fingerpicking that was the attraction for Sunny War. She loved playing guitar that way as opposed to strumming and, as you watch this Tiny Desk, you'll see what a fluid and remarkable guitar player she's become.

This guy has to be the most respectful backup singer ever. Compliments without ever attempting to distract from Ms. War's magical voice. This is exactly as it should be. A guitar prodigy gets to perform on the global stage, where she always belonged. Been a long road from Venice beach. Glad to witness this.

seeing this lady go from busking the streets of venice beach over a decade ago to tiny desk (with so many ups and downs in between) brings a tear to our eye.

Forreals! I still listen to her Sunny Wars 3 video all the time and saw her play in Cudahy. So stoked to see her blown up. Her music is so powerful that when she plays it’s like a great bird just flew into the room.

Her talent as a singer, song writer and guitarist is just way off the charts, incredible, so happy to be alive when I listened, she will be playing long after I am gone, at least I hope so :) Unique is not a word given lightly.
No need to Talk sweet lady, your music is saying all you need to say. So happy to see you doing well, Jah bless!
She's a really great guitarist's, been following her for years, since someone first recorded her out in Cali, showed all my friends, she's special, without pop-glam.

Thanks to NPR and Tiny Desk,at the age of 66,i am still discovering new and exciting music
I can imagine Sunny War music playing in the background of a movie.🎥 Or while I drive my convertible on the dirt roads of Savannah GA.🚘🌝
I love fingerpicking, and she's a master.
I just been introduced to Ms War - amazing. I love how she gets a sound almost like a Kora out of her guitar on the second track. And great finger-picking in the blues tradition on the third. Altogether a unique approach to the instrument that perfectly balances with her voice.

I always thought she has a bit Malian “desert music” in her playing.
Sonny is just an incredible songstress who melts your heart as you relax. Her songs will tell you all about it. I love her and her music along with her little band. They are great ! Thanks Sonny War for sharing a bit of yourself with us ! A friend always !

SOUL stirring music
The first time I heard Sunnys voice was in Venice, near Sunset and Speedway over 10 years ago and I can assure you that her voice is even more beautiful in person. I never understood how the people passing by this mystical, soul soothing voice could not be captivated. I was (and still am) in awe of her sheer power as a muscian, songwriter, and human being. You are a legend, plain and simple. I'm glad I stopped in my tracks every time i heard your voice on the boardwalk, because I still do when I'm watching you on big stages across the world.
Amazing talent! To be able to sing and play such intricate guitar pieces. Thanks again NPR for finding incredible musicians

I like it. Very nice. I love the Tiny Desk Concerts. It's where I find most of my favorite new artists since I don't listen to the radio. I think Rising Appalachia just recorded one. I'm looking forward to that.
Very beautiful voice. Très minimaliste, j'aime bien.
