Turnstile: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
Музыка
The Tiny Desk is working from home for the foreseeable future. Introducing NPR Music's Tiny Desk (home) concerts, bringing you performances from across the country and the world. It's the same spirit - stripped-down sets, an intimate setting - just a different space.
Lars Gotrich | January 5, 2022
From basements to bandshells, Turnstile shows are a life-affirming mosh-pit ballet. You sweat, you smile, you stage dive, you shake what ya mama gave ya. At the band's Tiny Desk (home) concert, Turnstile's high-energy hardcore is converted into seven songs over 17 minutes, surrounded by an art installation by John Scharbach - those stuffed animals presumably pogoing and windmilling in your imagination.
GLOW ON, one of NPR Music's 50 best albums of 2021, is the rambunctious sum of the band's many parts - as much Bad Brains as it is Rare Essence and Fania deep cuts - but with its wild styles fully fused as Turnstile. Filmed at drummer Daniel Fang's house in Baltimore, these songs are all power chords, compact guitar solos, cowbells and fuzz bass, with vocalist Brendan Yates accenting the melody behind the keys. At shows, Yates normally bounces around with joyous aplomb; here, his self-restraint is commendable as he mimes out his stage moves inside an invisible bubble.
In the back half, Turnstile upsets the sequence: "MYSTERY" is transformed into a Fender Rhodes ballad before launching into "T.L.C. (TURNSTILE LOVE CONNECTION)" - maybe not the first hardcore bruiser to reference Sly and the Family Stone, but certainly one elevated by gang vocals. These songs from GLOW ON, in particular, tug at loneliness and uncertainty, but Turnstile offers a reprieve before we jump back into the pit of life: At the set's close, Yates and Franz Lyons lose the Blood Orange verses from the studio recording of "ALIEN LOVE CALL" to meditate on its existential phrase: "Can't be the only one."

right, I was just watching this band called diespitz and they are pretty cool, I just wish they experimented a little more with their sound because honestly that fast paced punk style gets a little too repetitive after a while, and so is the case with a lot of new bands, they just do a formulaic thing.

I had never heard of this band before, but the fact they're a hardcore band able to play at such low volume, where the drums are easily heard and the guitars retain all their tone and energy along wit the bass on vocals, is phenomenal. In all my years as a sound engineer and musician (17 so far) I have never seen a jazz or "smooth" band able to play as loud as a punk band, or vice-versa. The drummer is using rods, which are specifically designed to be lower in volume than sticks. In an hardcore band. The level of musicianship is incredible. Great musicians can play with the same energy at any volume!

I never imagined that a front vocalist from a NYHC band could sing by a KEYBOARD, which is pretty dramatic and so cool. This is definitely the new music of our era. keep going dudes!

Underwater boi has been the anthem to help alleviate my depression and anxiety during the moments it feels unmanageable over the last 4 months. The reminder that I’ll be seeing them live in SF in February gets me so hyped and rejuvenated mentally. This band is amazing in more ways than I can describe with words!

I aactually like Turnstile more than I thought I would. How could you haate these guys its fun punk that mixes with other genres all the time. THey have great songs.
It is still one of my favourite tiny desk concerts. It is showing the true essence of the songs and how beautiful their songwriting is ❤🔥
Such a different vibe seeing them just sitting and chilling. Saw them recently in Mexico, crazy energy. Top 5 albums of 2021 imo.

@@MrEdlgar guitar solos aren't a pre-requite for a good guitar band, especially when the whole band are composing together and it isn't just mixed aeolian scales over a backing track/ jam band and a dude shredding for 30 minutes. i don't remember punk especially being a genre that had a focus on "look at me i'm talented".

The “I want to thank you for letting me see myself” reminds me so much of Sly and the Family Stone’s Thank you for letting me be Mice elf.
one of the only tiny desks i didn’t skip through like they ATE
Didn't know the guys behind one of 2021's best albums were just a bunch of dudes who look like they've stepped out of a Wes Anderson scene and then proceeded to shop at the local Converse.
hate5six again killing it in the video department!
