311: Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Maia Stern | March 11, 2024
What better way to spend March 11 than with 311 bringing love and nostalgia to the Tiny Desk. The members of 311, who have been a band together for over 30 years, strolled into NPR HQ and barely needed much rehearsal time before playing four of their most beloved tracks. The band has been performing these songs for decades, and you can tell it all just comes naturally. "This kind of reminds me of being in my dad's basement, being back next to the pool table, but it smells better here," said lead singer Nick Hexum, who felt right at home and back to his roots at our office space.
311's self-titled album came out in 1995 when I was entering my peak angst stage. The songs on that album were the perfect soundtrack to all the pre-teen feelings I wasn't able to fully express myself. I also heavily related to what remains to be my favorite lyric of all time from the band's 1997 album Transistor: "I do, I don't, whatever."
311's Tiny Desk set started off with the song that lyric comes from, personal favorite "Beautiful Disaster." The band continued with classic "All Mixed Up" before chilling out a bit with "Amber." Then, as Hexum said before the band's final track, "Down," it was "back to the rock." Listen out for SA's changed lyric honoring my and Tiny Desk's shared hometown: "Fall in love with your teachers, on the wax we are self made / Check the technique, 311 in D.C."

@marissadraper950

I love love this band. But their live performances are consistency to the point of boredom. I wish they would bring more energy. Work the crowd. Talk to us. Work in some dance breaks. Mix it up. Please god mix it up. Nick has been saying the same thing in his shows for decades. The intros are the same. The bass solo is the same. The drum break is the same. When you watch or attend a 311 concert you know what you're getting; the same thing you have the last 5, 10, 11 times you went to the show.

I've been a touring musician before. I can speak to how mind-numbing it can be to play the same music over and over. These guys have been doing these songs for decades. You don't do that unless you really, REALLY love your fans. They've already made their millions. They've already got their fame. They have nothing to prove anymore. The only thing I can see that keeps them going is just straight up love for one of the most loyal fanbases in the business. That's pretty admirable.

I saw them 2004 I was 16 still one of the greatest shows in my memory and I've seen them many times since. Nothing beats that 2004 Philly show where the roots opened for them.

As a teen in Southern California in the early 2000s you were so cool if you knew about 311 and knew their songs! Back when kroq still played actually good music😅. Miss those days 😭
I think I’ve seen 311 about 13 times .. never gets old and love every show !! Shout out to my sister introduced me way back when and has been a fan from the beginning. Much love here in VA for 311!
Can't believe they crammed their sound behind the Tiny Desk! Happy 311!
This 15 minutes, literally can bring back YEARS of memories and great time, so easily and quickly
Been listening to these guys since 2001. High school days. They always kept me in a good mood thru their unique sound and positive lyrics. Pnut was the reason I started playing bass after hearing “What Was I Thinking?”. Every band member has a unique and special style, that when combined, forms phenomenal music. One of the most underrated bands of all time. 38 years old now and still my favorite band!! Nothing like “Running” 2 miles with 311 in my ears!!! 🏃🏻 🎸 🎶
Hearing this makes my heart happy 🤘🏽
P Nut is one of the reasons i started playing bass in the late 90s. Glad these guys have stayed together for 36 years. Nick and Tim havent changed their hair styles in at least 20 years

Dude same, I remember hearing the blue album in my friends basement when I was about 12 and was like "i think i want to try playing bass". Still playing guitar regularly to this day.
What a trip! 311 sounds amazing and they still got it. I'm grateful everyday for being a 90's teen because we had a wealth of awesome music.

I was a little kid in that era, my siblings were teens - they listened to this stuff, I would be cimbing trees and playing in the woods all day, and rollerblading with my friends, playing SNES.... and I would go on little trips to the store or to drive around with my brother and sister, and they would be listening to this stuff -- RHCP, Sublime, 311, RATM.... you name it, all the hallmarks.... sevendust, etc.... leaves an indelible impression, such fond childhood memories and nostalgia - the 90s 😎🎮📺
God I love this band so much. Just good music, good lyrics and good feels. Makes me want to cry almost, I wish everything felt this good.

311 is literally one of the bands that sound EXACTLY like the radio. I had the chance to see them in Las Vegas in 2018. All my life, I’ve always heard them on the radio. Dude they sound so perfect
This band inspired me to take up the bass guitar almost 25? years ago. Still playing guitar regularly. Thanks, guys
Never heard of these guys . There not even in my radar of what I gravitate too and I couldn’t turn away from these grooves . These guys made me start a whole new category folder of what I like , lol Real talk .. And I’m fucken 60 years old ( no easy feat ) and these MF’s turned me out lol 😆 New fan !!!! ❤

I got into this band in the past 2 years…I just love how uplifting and positive a lot of their music is. I saw them at Red rocks and they’re great performers, and also talented musicians.
As a soul songwriter and muzik Producer myself, Nick Hexum taught me as a lifelong musician, one must remain teachable and expand their arsenal of skills! I love 311! Still keepin' it tight 🔥🔥🔥🤟🏼😁💖🎶🎸🥁
In late 2009 our first son was born and as my wife lay asleep in the hospital bed after ten hours of labor, they wheeled our new son in and he began to cry. As a new father not knowing what to do, I used my iPhone to play 311 Amber very softly in his crib as I struggled to change his diaper. I am 100% certain that moment set the tone for his life. He's chill, impossibly cool, creative, easy going, and everything you'd expect a kid to be who's first song ever was Amber. Fun update: When he was maybe 8 or 9, we were riding in the car and this song came on. He instantly connected with it and said "Dad, I really like this song" as if he'd heard it before. Thank you 311, it's a part of his DNA~

I love this. My youngest was born in 2018 and the son in the or as I had my c section was hey there Delilah. His first time watching/listening to a song was the strokes you only live once the day we brought him home from the hospital. Little dude is so into music, been singing along since before he could speak. Named after Layne Staley so it’s very fitting.

8:32 Amber, last week we took our High School Senior daughter to visit some Colleges, ended up at Huntington Beach. When leaving the beach around 6:00pm, a couple of teens were goin up the same stairs as us, and they were playing this song from their Bluetooth speaker. Perfect ending to our Beach day man.
Memories just rushing back. Tiny desk has been on point. I remember listening to NPR when I was younger and being called a dork or whatever and now it comes full circle.
Looking back, the number of great bands from the early 90's is bonkers.
