Vicente García: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

Feb. 2, 2018 | Felix Contreras -- Singer-songwriter Vicente García is still relatively under the radar, but performances like the one he gave at the Tiny Desk are starting to turn some heads.
García's music isn't dominated by his native Dominican Republic, but you can hear it in every note. His poetic lyrics are like short stories, sung by a voice both plaintive and evocative, yet always distinct.
From the opening strains of "San Rafael" to the final two tracks pulled from his latest album, A La Mar, VIcente García exhibits a fully formed and enchanting musical presence that will only get better over time.

quite beautiful. The spanish I learned at school doesn't really enable me to understand a lot, but the pure feel of the music doesn't need words to be understood.

I am from Asia and I stumbled upon Vicente Garcia's music on KZread years ago and through my travels; was enchanted ever since. His music is poetry. Anyway, this rad guy is already big in Latin America, I'm glad this talented musician was invited. Thank you TinyDesk, flippin' cool cats you guys are. Hopefully, some day the world will get to see Herencia de Timbiqui, Puerto Candelaria and Systema Solar at your TinyDesk too. That would be wicked.

Herencia de Timbiqui has the most authentic Pacific root jams and it’s exquisite to listen to! I’m surprised you’re from Asia and you know them well. 👏🏻

@@CarolNaranjocxnv Yes from Singapore, I have travelled mainly to South America a few times, hence, the exposure :) The music diversity on that continent blew me away. Just Colombia on its own, has such varied musical expressions across the regions which are amazing.

@@sebastianortega5836 Yeah, Herencia de Timbiqui tienen el poder de fascinar a todo el que este abierto a escuchar una musica de otra cultura. They are an oasis in the midst of so much noise pollution. Was lucky enough to see them at Petronio Alvarez Music Festival back in 2017.

I'm late to this Tiny Desk but discovered his soothing voice about a year ago. I teach 1st grade, when I play his music for kids during writing time they write and sway lol! Very beautiful music

esa primera canción me transporto a mi Barahona querida, ajustandome un pecao frito con moro de guandules y tostones....viendo el atardecer de San Rafael con su bosque verde tropical, oyendo las olas romper a pocos metros y escuchando el rio San Rafael con esa aguita friiisima.....

Vicente Garcia, una de las mejores personas que existe en este mundo. Su música, su pasión... No tiene comparación. Me encanta verlo tocar y cantar, es simplemente maravilloso. La profundidad de sus letras, te transportan y te llevan diría que a otro sitio, otro mundo. The harmonics at 4:42... San Rafael is also a great song. People who know that place - and the context of the lyrics (there is a river next to the beach)... very powerful song...
