WILLOW: Tiny Desk Concert

Музыка

Ashley Pointer | May 1, 2024
On a call ahead of her Tiny Desk taping, WILLOW told me that she "just wants to feel it and be in the vibe." Many artists worry about having to tailor their music for the space, but if done right, a beautiful synergy can be achieved. With boundless energy and magnetic stage presence, the artist's exceptional vocal range and musicality left the audience spellbound.
Despite being only 23 years old, the singer-songwriter and musician Willow Smith is a vet when it comes to this music thing. She's been consistently making music and on a journey of sonic exploration since she was just 9 years old and is about to put out her sixth album, empathogen, in just a few days. Zach Tenorio on upright piano kicks off the show, cueing the first few bars of the jazz-infused, odd-meter vibes of "Symptom of Life" from the new album, later complimented by trippy Ebow effects courtesy of Liso Lee on guitar.
Then, a couple throwbacks: a stripped down arrangement of "Split" from the 2022 album and fan-favorite "Wait a Minute!" from her 2015 album ARDIPITHECUS, which undergoes some mind-blowing bass riffing from Mohini Dey. Dey continues with some severe stank-face on a world premiere of the funky, bass-heavy "Run!" from the upcoming album, locking in tastefully with The Pocket Queen on drums. Closing the set with "Big Feelings," the band gets busy while WILLOW's vocals soar, effortlessly teetering between emotive highs and lows, leaving us all wanting more.

To all those bringing up finances which she can't control. I was referring to the fact that her dad tried to box her into one genre which led her to quit music. Now as an adult she is free to create whatever she wants. Negative energy has no place in this chat. ASE 🙏🏾😌

They overplayed and shifted the focus, they need to chill and let the song breath. It was a show off session to see who can put the most expression into every note. Just because you can, doesn't mean you should. It's actually disrespectful to the artist being Willow and her music.

Fun fact: The marking on Willow’s forehead is called tilak- it’s made with a clay from a sacred holy river and the paste is called Gopi Chandan. A mantra is chanted when applying it asking God to reside in the mind and open our minds to His presence! (It’s placed on 12 different parts of the body too) It’s a beautiful ancient Vedic practice from a spiritual lineage called Krishna Consciousness. Or God consciousness! Its main teaching is that we are all spirit souls, not the body.

@@RnBReworked -- Short for nepotism. She has famous parents, but her talent is so much greater than anything either one of them has shown, IMO. Although she has some cowriters on some of her songs, she can play the guitar and sing simultaneously, and sing beautifully at that. And she's not afraid of complex time signatures, unusual chords, etc. When that first "Whip My Hair" song came out, I mistakenly dismissed her music as only getting attention because of her parents and their money. But she has absolutely proven me wrong.

My favorite part of Willow’s performance(s) is that she appears to be having the best time ever. We’re so used to existing on the vibration of misery (or being around it) that it’s super rare to see someone enjoying what they do this much. Makes me want to be more intentional about creating space for more joy in my life. After all, we’re only guaranteed one ride at this thing.

Willow just brought a bunch of awesome talents here! Edit: I made mistake. The female guitarist isn't the one in SE SO NEON, she's a different person and the one in the S. I don’t care who her parents are. Money cannot buy what she has. She’s sincere, naturally gifted, and has a voice all her own. EDIT: Everyone in the comments stating the obvious. Of course her parents fame and financial status has benefited her immensely. But you can throw all the money in the world at someone and the best you can hope to do is turn them into a one dimensional entertainer if they have no natural substance of their own. True artists are born and Willow has that extra little something in spades. If all she wanted was to be in the spotlight she could’ve easily taken the Kardashian route but she chose to stand for something, apply herself, put in the work and, yes, utilize everything available to her, including the wealth of the family she was born into. Unless you’re stuck on whining about how unfair life is, you should take zero issue with that.
