FKA twigs: Tiny Desk (Home) Concert
Музыка
This year, NPR Music is celebrating Black Music Month with an array of brand new Tiny Desk concerts - both from home and from behind our beloved Desk. Together, these artists represent the past, present and future of Black music. This month of carefully curated shows is a celebration of Black artists expressing themselves in ways we've never seen before, and of the Tiny Desk's unique way of showcasing that talent.
LaTesha Harris | June 10, 2022
To see her is to appreciate a rare portrait. To watch her dance and hear her sing is to fall, entranced, into an uncanny haze. Both snake and its charmer, British Jamaican multidisciplinary artist FKA twigs is a new-age priestess. Surrounded by flames of offering in the hallowed halls of London's St. Matthias Church, the Grammy-nominated artist and her three-piece supporting band deliver a sermon on the perils of devotion. In her three-song Tiny Desk (home) concert -- featuring soul-baring ballads like “home with you” and “cellophane” -- she honors the strength of vulnerability; her operatic soprano ignites and delivers catharsis.
After working as a backup dancer with hopes of transitioning to singing, FKA twigs released two EPs before achieving widespread critical acclaim with her debut studio album, 2014’s LP1, and its lead single, “Two Weeks.” A classically trained singer, FKA twigs makes music that blends deceptively demure vocals with otherworldly trip-hop beats. She perfected this signature avant-garde sound on her sophomore album, 2019’s MAGDALENE, establishing herself as a direct musical descendent of iconic innovators like Kate Bush and Janet Jackson. Fresh off the success of her recent mixtape, CAPRISONGS, FKA Twigs blesses viewers with a performance of her latest song, “killer.”

How do you love rap when rap doesn’t love you back? From Rico Nasty’s harassment from toxic Carti fans, to Saucy Santana's unapologetically femme aesthetics in a queerphobic industry, to the assault case that put Megan Thee Stallion’s entire image on trial, each episode of Louder Than A Riot - the second season of our investigative hip-hop podcast - unpacks the unspoken rules of rap that hold the entire culture back. Tap in to our first episode at n.pr/louder-season-2.

Exposure to all genres and styles informs our most creative young artists. She has done her homework and is making the most of it. It’s going to be exciting seeing how she continues to develop and grow. Music is a communication art form, and she is communicating powerfully. I suspect (predict?) that every brutal, raw, and finely-nuanced texture, silence, harmony, rhythm, and timbre will ultimately occupy her palette.

if she did a cover of running up that hill my life would be complete.
The vocals are superb, the band sounds heavenly, the staging is otherworldly, but her STAGE PRESENCE? The way she just *looks* into the camera from time to time, knowing she's looking into your very soul. Her posture, the subtle movements, the way she lets the song move her but is still in such *command* of the performance. All just SITTING there. This is a MASTERCLASS in performance.
@bootz966

Truly! I feel like with this style of music it's so easy to lose the engagement of an audience during a live show, but she really tells a story with her movement. It makes you want to keep tuning in. The dancing at the end of Home With You, as well as the first chorus of Cellophane were so incredibly engaging, entertaining, and just absolutely heartfelt.
“Home with You” gets me very emotional every time I hear it. The arrangement, lyrics, and her voice make her pain and longing palpable. This rendition is even more heart wrenching and beautiful to me. I found myself in tears by the end.

When she gripped the microphone during cellophane I literally had to stop and take a deep breath knowing what was to come
She means every word, especially in Cellophane. She has opened up her heart to us, she's letting us in, but she's also speaking directly to who this song is about. She is so powerful, because she's strong enough to be open and honest and vulnerable with the world, using music to accentuate her experience and augment it to one that we can all relate to. Maybe it's hitting me now because I finally feel like I've accessed my own unshakable sense of truth and take power from vulnerability, but FKA Twigs is the artist of our generation. Sending nothing but infinite love to you, Twigs

it's frustrating to me that I can't properly articulate how this music makes me feel.....and then I realize there are simply no words for how incredible she is. The fact she shares her art with us is such a blessing. @FKA twigs...to thank you a million times is not enough. You are amazing❣ ❣❣
Been listening to FKA Twigs since the first EP…. Never ceases to amaze, surprise, and delight
One of the best, most authentic, raw and emotion performances I’ve ever seen. Thank you fka twigs for your determination, strength, and bravery as an artist. You are truly inspirational
This lady on the left is playing both violin and bass? AMAZING...Talk about a contrast. BTW FKA is amazing too and that goes without a saying! Her singing is otherworldly!

they're actually nonbinary! pronouns they/them
She went in. Love her... "Home With You" was sang so beautifully.
one of the best artists of our generation, i wish she performed more songs but the performance is still a blessing
i will never not be in awe of her talent, i love this woman so much. i love how she takes her craft seriously and makes it a point to deliver more than what we deserve. she truly is an icon.
Home With You still feels fresh every time I listen to it.
This woman is out of this world. I thought the Fallon performance of Cellophane was just IT. It was mesmerizing, but Twigs always manifest her art like a new blossom every performance. I’m always in awe of her letting us immerse ourselves in her amazing talent and mind. This version of Cellophane just draws you into the feels…love love love IT!

Also ICONIC POWERFUL PERFORMERS ACROSS THE BOARD!! Each a standalone performer in her own rite!
She put her whole fka twigussy into this ong
she was a fairy ✨
This is hands down my favorite NPR tiny desk concert and before seeing this performance I had never listened to FKA Twigs. Powerful.
Huge FKA Twigs fan and this is sublime. I love the orchestral arrangement. It suits her stunning vocals perfectly. Reminiscent of Kate Bush.
fka twigs is one of the hardest working and most outstanding artists making music today
Her facial expressions throughout Cellophane cut right to the heart 🥺💀
this is one of the best performances i’ve ever seen
She is an angel in a human body.
Honestly the aesthetic and emotions were surreal! One of my favourite performances💖😭
home with you was the PERFECT introduction to this woman's ethereal out of this world sound.
Amazing. Speaks volumes about the abject nature of humanity that this woman's art is not elevated above the garbage that corporations push on the consuming public.
Hope you can read this someday, Tahliah. The feeling you project is out of this world, it just makes me shiver. I also get overwhelmed, and it's for artists like you that I keep hanging on... You're a huge inspiration and I love you so much, please don't ever stop being true and making music
truly one of the greatest performers of the 21st century
This performance brings me to tears everytime.
Home With You is one of my all time favorite songs, and this arrangement?, come on, absolutely heavenly.
The high notes !! Omg shivers 🥰✨
I don’t care how many times I hear it. Home with you dismantles me like no other song can. I cry like it’s my first time hearing it every time. 😩
her power to sing AND write these songs is unbelievable, simply amazing. she delivers every time.
Dynamic transformation of her classical training to make a unique and simply ethereal sound. Purely her own. I appreciate her authenticity and loyalty to her own sound. Beautiful accompaniment from the violinist/bassist, cellist, and pianist.
so this is what heaven sounds like... wow. i'm transcending
Not many singer has the talent that she has. This is hands down the best tiny desk I've seen.
I simply did not realize the talent this woman had until this. Fabulous.
shout out to anyone in the world who watched this video without having a full scale emotional breakdown, i admire your strength
