GWAR: Tiny Desk Concert
Музыка
Lars Gotrich | July 17, 2023
As the band of intergalactic monsters strapped guitars to their battle-worn bodies, thunder and rain pounded the NPR building outside. As if the late Oderus Urungus was pissing his blessing from Valhalla, the prophecy had finally been fulfilled: GWAR came to destroy the Tiny Desk once and for all.
On Feb. 15, 2020, a parody news site ran the headline: "GWAR asks NPR's Tiny Desk Staff if They're Ready to Get Their A******* Ripped Open." My text messages suddenly blew up. Is this real? No, it's literally fake. Can this be real? Little did they know I'd already been talking to one of the group's underlings since 2019 to bring the Scumdogs of the Universe to the office of seltzer and sensibility.
For nearly four decades, GWAR has terrorized planet Earth with its gratuitously blood-soaked stage shows and grotesque satire. The interplanetary warriors have made comic books, beer, BBQ sauce and, um, adult toys. But, most importantly, GWAR has written some of the raunchiest, silliest and hookiest heavy metal songs, four of which were performed at the Tiny Desk to a giddy audience. No heads were decapitated, but Blöthar the Berserker and Pustulus Maximus did invade All Things Considered afterward to part from NPR with these immortal words: "CDeez nutz."
"Sex Cow"
"I'll Be Your Monster"
"Ratcatcher"
"Phantom Limb"

Saw the 2005 version of Gwar at Sounds of the Undergeound at the Tweeter Center in Chicago in 100 degree heat... Took an hour for the stage to get set for a 40 minute set... we were all just so hot and exhausted after hours of a festival but 99% of the crowd was so happy and impressed by their performance we forgot all about the heat. R.I.P. Oderous. This is still great though, especially Phantom Limb❤
Not the tiny desk we asked for but the one the universe knew we needed. GWAR was my stepdads favorite band and had a huge influence on my life because of it. Miss you Oderus I’m sure he was smiling ear to ear at this spectacle. Great show 🥲

GWAR and NPR?!?! What timeline am I in?? GLORIOUS!!
I didn't know what to expect clicking on the thumbnail. I am so glad that I did though!! I've come back to comment again. What a great band!! I love fun music and these are the epitome. Thank you GWAR!
First tiny desk concert I watched all the way through
I am so thrilled to be watching this. The jokes. The comments. The costumes. The irreverence. The silliness. The music. The embrace of it all by an outlet that has a lot of uptight moments. Chef's kiss
Once again, NPR leaves me 🤯 Thanks so very much tiny desk concerts for this unexpected not in a million years rare gem inserted into my feed. A testimony to just how truly diverse NPR's base is. Keep pushing the envelope, we all ❤ it!
All the tiny desk concerts bring me SO MUCH JOY!! 🖤
God what an awful racket… bloody good time! Thanks NPR this was great. 🤘
THESE GUYS DESERVE MORE RESPECT, MUSIC IS CRAZY GOOD!
These Guys are actually super talented. The rediculous costumes prevented me from ever taking them serious enough to look up their music 😂😂😂😂
seeing the iconic "Jizzmak Da Gusha" playing with soft touch drum sticks is a new one.
Everyone on the planet should see GWAR twice... first time to take in the visuals and the second time to dance out to the music.

Seeing them in August for my 9th time. Finally doing a meet and greet with them for the first time.
theatrics aside, they're actually pretty good musicians

Anyone who says GWAR can't play has never listened to them honestly. They're fantastic musicians and I'm glad people can recognize that 👊
I'm genuinely upset that I wasn't born in the 70s to enjoy GWAR in the 90s.
This was the first legit band I ever saw live in 2008 when I was 13. I blame this band for lighting a fire in me and becoming a musician myself, and loving music soo much 🤘🏼🤘🏼thank you
In all my days, I never thought I'd come to see this band perform on NPR 🤣
NPR you owe me a new keyboard (and a cup of coffee). Never in a million years would I have imagined "GWAR: Tiny Desk Concert" would appear in my feed. Well done!!
Whoever is in charge of the line up for Tiny Desk…I tip my biggest hat to you 🙌
I love how they stop and do a pledge drive in the middle of the show😂 haven't seen Gwar since the 90s lol. I love the variety of all kind of music on Tiny Desk. You will literally see everything. Great job 👏
I have never heard of this band before. I'm 71, Idk, where have I been?😮😂

They're in a rather unique niche of the heavy metal world

I first heard of them from the MTV show Viva La Bam. They actually had a lot of sick music on that show.
